From January 1989 to December 1992, 24 patients with rectal carcinoma underwent<br>rectal anastomosis using double stapling technique at Surgical department of Kwangju<br>Christian Hospital.<br>The results were obtained as follows;<br>1) There were 13 men and 11 women. Age ranged from 33 to 75 years with a mean<br>of 56.7 years.<br>2) The distance from anal verge to tumor was as follows; 6 cases(25%) below 5 cm,<br>7 cases(29.2%) within 5.1 to 6 cm, 5 cases(20.8%) within 6.1 to 7 cm, 5 cases(20.8%)<br>within 7.1 to 8 cm, 1 case(4.2%) was 8.7 cm.<br>3) The distribution according to Astler-Coller modification of Dukes' classification was<br>as follows; A: 0%, B<sub>1</sub>:25%, B<sub>2</sub>: 37.5%, C<sub>1</sub>: 20.8%,<br>C<sub>2</sub>: 16.7%.<br>4) The resected margin below the tumor was as follows; 5 cases(20.8%) below 1.5<br>cm, 13 cases(54.2%) within 1.6∼2.0 cm,6 cases(25%) above 2.1 cm.<br>5) There was no death. Postoperative complications were 3 cases of wound<br>infection(12.5%), 1 wound dehiscence(4.2%) and 1 anastomotic leakage.<br>Late<br>complications were 8 cases of constipation(33.3%), 2 stenosis(8.3%),2 diarrhea, 2<br>incontinence, 1 anal fissure(4.2%) and 1 systemic recurrence. There was no local<br>recurrence during a follow-up of between 3 to 48 months and every cases of<br>complication were treated by conservatively with fair improvement except systemic<br>recurrence.<br>
