The records of 35 patients undergoing abdominoperineal resection due to rectal cancer<br>at the Department of General Surgery, Soon Chun Hyang University hospital between<br>January 1, 1985, and December 31, 1990, were reviewed. Of 35 patients undergoing<br>abdominoperineal resection, the postoperative bowel obstructions were developed in 13<br>patients(37.1%). Four patients were operated on for either failure to resolve their<br>obstruction or because it was feared that ischemic bowel was present. In one patient<br>who occured postoperative bowel obstruction due to small bowel volvulus,<br>the<br>strangulated ischemic bowel was identified. But remaining 12 patients who resolved<br>either with or without reoperation, didn't dead bowel occur. This study was undertaken<br>to identify those factors that Predispose to small bowel obstruction after the<br>abdominoperineal resection and to determine the most effective therapy<br>
